Hours later, after he had eaten his meal and the grooms slept below him, he discovered what she meant. Damian slipped down the steps past them, listening to their snores, the rustlings on their cots, and down to the stable proper. After checking on his charge and taking a moment to rub the white stallion’s nose, he went out into the yard.
And came face to face with Gabriella.
“What are you doing?” he hissed, keeping his voice down while grabbing her by the arm and dragging her into the deeper shadows.
She laughed low in her throat. “I came to see you.”
“Not a smart thing to do when there’s a killer or two out there seeking my life.” He stared around where the moonlight gave a clear view, but nothing moved that shouldn’t. “Something tells me you didn’t just come to see me. You know something.”
“For a commoner, you are rather smart.”
“Are we really going to compare bloodlines right now?” he asked, annoyed at her risking herself to see him and filled with joy that she had. “Tell me, so you can go back inside and be safe.”
“I’m safe enough with you.”
Bold enough to take her by the hand, he led her among the trees near the garden where the shadows were so thick, he could barely see her even though she stood beside him. “I wouldn’t be so confident about that if I were you,” he said, his voice just above a whisper. “People are out to kill me, and I don’t even have a knife to protect you with.”
“Then I’ll get you one.”
Now that would be useful. Have at least a weapon to defend myself with. “If you can do that, I’d be grateful.”
“I’ll bring you one tomorrow.”
He noticed she didn’t try to disengage her hand from his. He liked that, her small hand in his, her closeness in the deep shadows where none could see them. Do I dare kiss her again? What will she do? Start screaming that I am trying to violate her? Daring to try, taking the risk, he slid his hand around to the back of her neck, bent and kissed her softly.
Rather than scream or slap his face, Gabriella leaned into his kiss, her arms creeping around his neck to kiss him back. Astounded, amazed, he almost drew away from her in shock. Then the delicious emotions, the thrill of kissing this delicate, noble lady, took hold of him, making him bolder.
He didn’t want to let her go, but when she drew away from him, he didn’t try to stop her. “That was nice,” she whispered. They were a mere shape in the shadows. “I liked it.”
“I thought you’d slap me.”
“I should have. But I liked it too much.”
“Should I kiss you again?”
“Just for a moment.”
Taking her into his arms, he kissed her again, liking the feel of her close to him, his emotions rising, swamping him, knowing that he could never hope to marry her. He was a commoner. She would marry for wealth and prestige.
